The second time Shepard woke up was drastically different from them first. The lights were muted and he just felt sore, not immediately overwhelmed with pain. He gingerly felt his torso, recalling how the assassin's cursed hand-held cannon had pounded away a hole in his side. The injury was now covered in bandages and medi-gel patches from what he could tell.
"You're still all there," came the steady, throaty voice of his best friend, Garrus. "Chakwas had her work cut out for her though to keep it that way. You took one hell of a beating. I admit, you had us all a little worried there, Commander."

She turned on her side and readjusted her pillows for what was probably the hundredth that night. As weary as she was, sleep should have been an easy task. Unfortunately her mind did not want to cooperate with what her body was demanding. Her mind wanted to think about Earth and all the horrors taking place there, about Kaiden and the angry bruises on his face, about Palaven and about Garrus. She hoped her turian friend was alive and well. Shepard uttered a dejected sigh and pulled herself off the mattress. Eric blinked away his sleepiness. He immediately noticed an unfamiliar but pleasant weight on his chest. Tilting his head forward a little, he could see blue and white flecked scalp crests rising and sinking in unison with his own breathing. The sight brought a contented smile to his face. Commander Shepard approached Liara's office and stopped short of the door sensors. She drew in a deep breath, closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. She could hear the sobs out here. Each one was breaking her heart. Shepard took another step forward and the office door opened. A wave of relief passed over her, she had been worried that door would be locked.
